Torquay: Cockrem for the author, [1834-1840]. 5 volumes, including a supplementary volume, 4° (vols.I-IV: 292 x 240mm.; suppl.vol.: 310 x 243mm). Vols.I-IV: letterpress title to each volume and 2pp. general index at end of volume IV, 305 specimens representing 201 species of seaweed on 203 leaves, either mounted on paper sheets pasted to the page or attached to pages by means of paper strips, each species with letterpress label pasted beneath, extra-illustrated with 4 leaves of duplicate specimens (nos.17, 24, 83 and 110); supplementary volume: 32 specimens representing 29 species of seaweed on 29 leaves, extra-illustrated with 28 leaves of specimens which duplicate examples in vols.III and IV. (A little light marginal spotting and offsetting, appreciable damage to nine specimens.) Vols.I-IV: original red morocco-backed boards, letterpress labels on spines (spines worn, split and with sections lacking, some damage to each label); supplementary vol.: contemporary green cloth (rebacked to style in red morocco). Provenance : William Arnold Bromfield (1801-1851, botanist, armorial bookplates in vols.I-IV) -- The Birmingham Microscopists' & Naturalists' Union (ink stamp in each volume). AN EXTREMELY RARE WORK, HERE WITH AN INTERESTING PROVENANCE. Only two copies appear in British auction records for this century (1. sold in 1927 from the botanical library of the Rev. S. Gasking; 2. these rooms, 27 April 1994, lot 65). It is referred to by Pritzel in his entry for William Harvey's Manual of British Algae , 1841, a work cited by Wyatt in the labels to the supplement, and there is a copy in the Natural History Museum Library. The present set appears to have been made up sometime after Bromfield's ownership of the first four volumes. According to Stafleu and Cowan a fifth volume with a letterpress title and containing 37 leaves of specimens (each with letterpress title label) was published in about 1840. The present fifth volume contains only 29 leaves of specimens which do not appear in the earlier volumes and none include a printed number on the identification labels.
