Y A REGENCY TULIPWOOD, CALAMANDER AND GILT BRONZE MOUNTED SOFA TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE OAKLEY CIRCA 1815 73cm high, 92cm wide unextended, 66.5cm deep Provenance: Private collection Knightsbridge, acquired from Critchley-Waring Fine Arts, London, 1991 for £30,000. A closely related sofa table with almost identical leaf carved mounts attributed to George Oakley was sold Christie's, A New York Private Collection, 18th October 2017, Lot 609 ($13,750) The firm recorded at 22 St. Paul's Churchyard, and thereafter, 8 Old Bond Street, London, who described themselves as the 'Manufactory and Magazine for fashionable Furniture', attracted the patronage of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales (later George IV) at Carlton House, London. In May 1799 members of the Royal Family visited his showrooms and 'did Mr. Oakley the honour of viewing his Furniture Warehouse in New Bond Street'. The visitors 'highly approved of the splendid variety which has justly attracted the notice of the fashionable world'.
