The Turin craftsman Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo is regarded as one of the foremost exponents of 18th century Italian marquetry and exquisitely detailed wood working alongside Piffetti and Maggiolini. This micro-sculpture in wood, together with lot 138, are excellent examples of the virtuosity of the artist. His work was highly sought after in his time with commissions from the Italian Royal Family, the Savoy and international nobility and Élisabeth Philippe Marie Hélène de France, also known as Madame Élisabeth (1764-1794). He crafted busts, medallions and profiles for these clients and was appointed royal court sculptor by Vittorio Amedeo III in 1787.
