Beschreibung:

Moseley, Elizur (1765-1833). Postmaster, physician, county justice, merchant, and sheriff. Diploma from Yale University, 13 x 9.5 in. September 1786. Still contains its original seal and blue ribbon. Elizur Moseley was the first post master, physician, and merchant to inhabit Whitesboro, New York. Local legend has it that everything in his store had a price. A group of chums at a tavern once bet someone to find an item without a price. One man went to the store and inquired what he thought was a fictitious "goose yoke." Moseley asked if he wished for a forked stick or single goose neck yoke and proceeded to retrieve one (Transactions of the Oneida Historical Society at Uttica, 1881-1884, 81). Although he was the subject of a bet, Moseley was a well-respected member of the community. His Yale education made him a man of many trades and talents edified by his impressive list of achievements and positions. His only son, William graduated and studied law at Yale. Curriculum at Yale began as strictly for religious studies, but by 1777 it expanded its degree studies to the humanities and sciences. Condition: Typical folds and toning of the paper at the folds.
