VG+ (4.5). Spine stress, small nicks to spine ends, staple rust, bottom staple partially pulled, tiny ¼" edge tear, cover flat and bright, no chips. Cream to off-white pages. Professionally cleaned and pressed by Comics In A Flash. Potential to slab at 5.0. Cover: Doug Wildey? Art: Harry Harrison, Ed Goldfarb, Doug Wildey Stephen Kirkel. Overstreet: "'Monkey on Her Back' swipes E.C. drug story/Shock SuspenStories #12." GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. Only two reported sales in any grade, one in 2006 and one in 2019. A 7.0 (Crippen copy) sold for $343 in September 2019. The cover, featuring a stern lover wooing a sexy brunette, scarcely hints at the sordid goings-on within. Overstreet calls Ed Goldfarb's reefer madness tale, "Monkey on Her Back," a rip-off of EC's "The Monkey" from Shock SuspenStories #12 (Dec. 1953-Jan. 1954). Goldfarb's yarn was published half a year earlier, however, so if anyone perpetrated a swipe, it was EC. Both stories feature youthful protagonists who get peer-pressured into puffing reefers and soon graduate to mainlining heroin — an anti-drug trope dating to the 1936 propaganda flick "Marihuana." EC Fan-Addicts are rightly proud of EC's artistry and originality, and it stings a bit to acknowledge that EC was as prone to swipes as anyone else. Modern fans seem more inclined to moralize about swipes than their earlier counterparts, who viewed swiping more sympathetically: "Good swiping is an art in itself... Swipes, if noticed, were accepted as part of comic book folklore. I have never heard a reader complain. Rather, I have heard swipe artists vigorously defended, one compared to another: who did the best Caniff, the closest Raymond?" — Jules Feiffer The Great Comic Book Heroes. Dial: 1966, pp. 38-39. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
