Three Framed Architectural Scenes on Paper: Charles William Dahlgreen (American, 1864-1955),Tribune #3, signed "Chas. W. Dahlgreen" in pencil beneath the image, etching, plate size 10 3/4 x 6 3/8 in.; American School, 20th Century, Tower of the Old State House, Boston, signed and dated faintly "Hans H.H./1951" in ink l.r., mixed media, sight size 29 x 19 1/2 in.; and After Richard Yoshihiro Mine, 20th Century, Competition for The New Tribune Building, inscribed, dated, and signed "This is my Original Drawing submitted to The Chicago Tribune Tower Competition, 1922/Richard Y. Mine/January 4, 1979" within the matrix l.r., reproduction print of an architect's rendering, sight size 49 x 19 1/2 in. Condition: Old State House with what appears to be an artist-made correction to the left side of the upper part of the tower, none examined out of frames. N.B. The specific identity of the Old State House artist or architectural renderer is not known, but it is tempting to attribute the work to Hans Henrik Hansen (1894-1965),a Danish porcelain artist who designed many plates for Royal Copenhagen. Looking online, another modern work depicting Venice (1957) and signed "Hans H.H." was further inscribed "Hans H. Hansen" on the frame backing. Regarding the Chicago Tribune work, in the summer of 1922 the Chicago Tribune hosted an international design competition for its new headquarters, and offered $100,000 in prize money with a $50,000 1st prize for "the most beautiful and distinctive office building in the world." More than 260 entries were submitted. The design shown here by Richard Yoshihiro Mine of Urbana, Illinois, received an Honorable Mention. The First Prize was awarded to New York architects Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells The significant Second Prize went to Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen encouraging him to move to the United States in 1923.
