A Flemish classical tapestry, second half 16th or early 17th century, probably Oudenaarde, depicting an elaborate figural scene with a general in Roman attire and soldiers, one shield emblazoned with an armorial of crescent moons and a star, before a verdant landscape with animals and further hunting figures, later backed, approximately, 192 x 274cm overall An example of similar composition was sold at Christie's London, noble and private collections, 27 April 2016, lot 459 (£10,000), and another panel also described as Oudenaarde and with comparable central figure recently appeared at Sotheby's, 2 February 2021, lot 34 (£12,600). Condition Report: Usual minor marks, nicks and wear overall consistent with age. The colour scheme is a little faded particularly in the costume, sky and skin toes, though it is fairly balanced overall. Patches of irregular colour wear in places including to central armorial shield, either due to old repair or different ageing of dyes. Minor old stitches and possible patches of restoration in places, though the textile is stable overall. No borders present other than the ones illustrated. Condition Report Disclaimer
