A rare pair of George Grainger & Co. Worcester topographical dessert comports, c.1846, each piece finely painted in enamel colours with the titled views 'Malvern Abbey Church Worcestershire' & 'Claines Church Worcestershire', within rich gilt and crimson borders bearing the coat of arms of Worcester and the city motto 'CIVITAS IN BELLO IN PACE FIDELIS', on acanthus leaf moulded and pierced stems, height 14.5cm Estimate £300-500 Provenance: Presented by the City of Worcester to the Mayor, Alderman William Lewis c. 1846 in recognition of his work in bringing the railway to Worcester. William Lewis Esquire was Mayor of Worcester in 1843-44 and 1846. Thence by family descent. Literature: see John Sandon, The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, The Antique Collector's Club, Volume 1, p 192 for a colour illustration of pieces from this service. Both comports with very minor wear to the gilding, the comport with a view of Malvern Abbey Church has a tiny firing fault immediately above the church and a tiny glaze flake next it which has been made in manufacture otherwise in good condition with no restoration, chips or cracks.
