Imanuel Aboab's grandfather was given the name Duarte Dias at the time of the General Conversion (1497) imposed on the Jews in Portugal by King Manuel. He was the son of Isaac Aboab II (Toledo 1433-Oporto 1493), refered to by Joseph Caro as one of the greatest rabbinical scholars of his time. Nomologia o defensas legales is a defense of Oral or rabbinical Tradition, heavily contested by some of the Spanish and Portuguese conversos who had reverted to Judaism, but were unaware of its orthodox practice. The work is famous by its defense of Jews in the accounts of many contemporary events, such as the expulsion of Jews from Spain, in 1492. For this reason, it has been considered one of the first Jewish historiographies.
