A distant view of a pontoon bridge at Berlin, MD, which served as a replacement for a bridge that had been burned by Confederate troops in June of 1861; Negative by T.H. O'Sullivan/ Positive by A. Gardner/ No. 58/ Pontoon Boat, Brandy Station, Virginia/ February, 1864, 7 x 9 in. Note the photographer's wagon behind the wooden pontoon boat, plus a tent and small stockade; and Negative by J. Gardner/ Positive by A. Gardner/ No. 69/ Pontoon Bridge Across the James/ June, 1864, 7 x 9 in. A shot capturing several soldiers positioned on or near one of the pontoon bridges utilized by the Union Army in June of 1865 as it moved towards Petersburg. All on original mounts, with plates 25 and 58 accompanied by original descriptive panels. These images were plates 25, 58, and 69 of the 100 plates published in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War. Condition: Very light toning to albumen photographs; area of toning on mat surrounding perimeter of photographs, indicating that they were matted or framed at some point.
