ALEXANDER II -- Dnevnik Zakonov. T.62. [Diary of Laws. Vol. 62]. Warsaw: V drukarni Rzadowej, 1864. 8° (230 x 140mm). Bilingual text, Russian and Polish on facing pages. Original green velvet, covers with gilt frame, upper cover centred with the imperial eagle, white moiré silk doublures, all edges gilt (spine lightly rubbed). Provenance : ?Alexander II (binding, ?Hermitage pressmark) -- 'Printed in Russia' (small stamp on front endpaper) -- Paul M. Fekula. PROBABLY ALEXANDER II'S COPY, bound in green velvet blocked with the imperial eagle, and with white moiré silk endpapers. Alexander's edict is dated March 1864, towards the end of the major Polish uprising which had begun in January the previous year, and was issued in response to these events. Alexander later banned the use of written Polish from all provinces, while spoken Polish was officially tolerated only in the Congress Kingdom. Fekula 1645 (this copy).
