On two sheets of lined paper joined together vertically, glued at top and bottom edges to backing paper. Overall 36.5x18.7 cm (14½x7½"). Handwritten copy by Samuel F. Smith of his hymn "America," better known today as "My Country 'Tis of Thee," composed by Smith in 1832 after a visit to Germany where he was impressed that German children started their school day by singing a hymn. He wrote a patriotic hymn using a simple German melody, which coincidentally,was the same as that of the British national anthem, "God Save the King". Smith jotted down the complete hymn on a piece of scrap paper within half an hour, and the result, "America", was first sung at a children's celebration in Boston's Park Street Church on July 4, 1832. Lot Amendments Condition: Matburn around edges, some other minor soiling and discoloration, a vertical crease, a bit wrinkled, very good. Item number: 262822
