Title: America - fair copy of the complete hymn, signed S.F. Smith Author: Smith, Samuel Francis Place No place Publisher: Date: 1879 Description: Four stanzas comprising 28 lines plus title and signature, dated 1832-1879 (the date of composition and the dated of this copy). On two sheets of lined paper joined together vertically, glued at top and bottom edges to backing paper. Overall 36.5x18.7 cm (14½x7½"). Handwritten copy by Samuel F. Smith of his hymn "America," better known today as "My Country 'Tis of Thee," composed by Smith in 1832 after a visit to Germany where he was impressed that German children started their school day by singing a hymn. He wrote a patriotic hymn using a simple German melody, which coincidentally,was the same as that of the British national anthem, "God Save the King". Smith jotted down the complete hymn on a piece of scrap paper within half an hour, and the result, "America", was first sung at a children's celebration in Boston's Park Street Church on July 4, 1832. Lot Amendments Condition: Matburn around edges, some other minor soiling and discoloration, a vertical crease, a bit wrinkled, very good. Item number: 262822
