APOLLOS [BAIBAKOV, Andrei Dmitrievich (1737-1801)]. Vera, Nadezhda i Liubov' . [Faith, Hope and Love]. Moscow: Novikov for the University Press, 1782. 8° (200 x 124mm). (Some pages browned, occasional spotting and marginal staining.) Contemporary calf, flat spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, red edges (spine foot worn, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Nilova Pustyn' Monastery (stamps, inscription) -- shelf marks. FIRST EDITION. Presented to the Monastery by an Archemandrite of the Russian Orthodox Church, possibly the author himself, who was Archimandrite of Zaikonospasskii Monastery in Moscow at the time. The text is a translation of sections of Sir Thomas Browne's Religio Medici , which was banned by the Catholic Church. Both of these works were confiscated from Moscow booksellers in 1787, when Catherine II ordered the seizure of all books of a religious nature not published by one of the Church's presses. Novikov, a well-known Freemason, was later condemned to fifteen years' imprisonment in the Schlusselberg Fortress. RARE: WorldCat records no copies in North America. SK 209; Sopikov 2726.
