Autograph Book: Munster Private Hotel. An autograph book compiled by Myra Nic Carthaigh, proprietor of the Munster Private Hotel in Dublin, including signatures from early Sinn Fein and Irish-language activists. In oblong boards, which have lost their original soft leather covering. Myra McCarthy was one of six sisters from south-west Kerry, with extensive connections in the IRB and the Gaelic League. Her sister Eibhlin (Ellie) married Fionan O Loingsigh, who taught Irish long before the foundation of the Gaelic League; their children included Fionan Lynch, IRB member and a close friend of Michael Collins who commanded the North King Street area in the 1916 Rising, and was later a Sinn Fein TD and Minister for Education in the Free State. Another sister, May, married Daniel McCallum; her children included the IRB organiser and folklorist Fionan Mac Coluim. Another, Marianne, married Jeremiah Kiely; their children included the Irish scholar Cormac O Cadhlaigh. Myra herself did not marry; for many years she ran the Munster Private Hotel in Mountjoy Street, Dublin, an IRB 'safe-house' where regular guests included Michael Collins after his return from London, Diarmaid O'Hegarty, Gearoid O'Sullivan and her nephew Fionan Lynch. The autograph book dates from around 1907-1911. The entries include Myra's nephews Fionan Lynch, Cormac O Cadhlaigh and Fionan Mac Coluim; her nieces Una and Treasa nic Choluim; Nora Aghas, sister of another Kerry Republican Thomas Ashe; and many others. An interesting item, more varied in tone than is usual in Republican autograph books, reflecting the lighter side of a lifestyle that was soon to be 'changed utterly' by the events of 1916.
