Bader (Group Captain Sir Douglas, 1910-1982). A unique presentation certificate conferring honorary citizenship on Group Captain Douglas Bader by the French town of St. Omer, 1964, illuminated in gilt and colours on parchment with applied coat of arms and seal, plus oval stamp of Mairie de St.-Omer to lower margin, 26 x 37cm. The certificate was awarded at a special ceremony to commemorate Bader’s attempted escape from the German hospital at St. Omer and Madame Hiecque’s attempt to hide and save him. Bader was recaptured and Madame Hiecque was arrested by the Gestapo. She survived and was awarded a certificate at the same ceremony. Provenance: Acquired from an auction of Bader’s effects sold by Lady Bader at Phillips, London in 1989, issued with Adrian Forman’s letter of guarantee. (1)
