John Bell (1763-1820), the great Edinburgh surgeon, went abroad for the sake of his health in 1817 after a fall from his horse, and spent the last 3 years of his life in Italy. His notes on painting, statuary, architecture and life in general were edited by Bishop Sandford of Edinburgh and published after his death in this work which Garrisson calls "the finest book of travel ever written by a physician." Rivington, 1831. 8° (226 x 136mm). 12 lithographed plates including frontispiece. 2 maps, one folding, and folding facsimile letter. (One plate spotted, another torn at inner margin, some marginal spotting.) Modern boards, uncut. Provenance : "Country Books Club" (circulating library label to front blank with printed list of members and manuscript entries for dates received and sent away). FIRST EDITION.
