Beschreibung:

Disraeli, Benjamin (1804-1881). British Prime Minister (1868, 1874-1880). ALS as Prime Minister, 2 p., "Osbourne." July 23, 1878. Addressed to an unknown person. He writes, I can give a good or goodish account of myself rehealth. I had a sharpish attack during the last week at Berlin, but after the great affairs were over, so it did not signify much. The life was hard: Congress five days in the week, I suffer interviews & committees...Then every day a banquet & a reception, absolutely necessary to attend, for half the business is transacted in them in this scene of endless intrigue...Yesterday, there was an investiture of the Order of the Garter here, & I was knighted...The Congress opened on the 13th June & we signed the Treaty of Berlin on the 13th July... A very haphazard businessman, Benjamin Disraeli struggled financially for most of his life. He tried his hand at novel writing for a while that garnered much criticism. With few options left, he resorted to politics. He was Jewish, but baptized Christian after his father had a serious altercation with a rabbi. British law forbade Jews to enter politics, but his baptism allowed him to run for a seat in Parliament. He struggled to gain an appointment, but he finally received one in 1845. By 1868, he accomplished the high office of Prime Minister. After his election he said to his friends, “I have climbed to the top of a greasy pole" (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Benjamin-Disraeli). His term was brief. He was not nominated again until 1874. A favorite of Queen Victoria, Disraeli treated her as a human being rather than a political institution. Her favor, however, could not save his failing health or declining popularity. He did have some success in foreign policy and acquired many Suez Canal shares. He implemented social reform that benefited the poor and working-class people. The end of his administration was largely dominated by foreign policy due to conflicts in Russia. The Treaty of Berlin resolved many of the issues. Feeling accomplished, he returned home saying he "brought back 'peace with honour'" (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Benjamin-Disraeli). Still, a poor investment in Afghanistan and South America ruined him financially and his party was heartily defeated in parliament. The series of disappointment furthered his ill health. He died shortly after in 1880. A few days after his funeral, Queen Victoria visited his family tomb and laid a wreath down for him. Condition: Typical folds and light soiling.
