BIENATUS, Aurelius (d.1496). Oratio in funere Laurentii de Medicis habita . [Milan: Philippus de Mantegatiis, Cassanus, after 8 April 1492]. Chancery 4° (208 x 138 mm). Collation: a 8 (a1r text, a8v verses on Lorenzo de' Medici). 8 leaves. 27 lines. One lombard initial. Type 1:110R a . Modern red morocco, single gilt fillet to sides, flat spine lettered in gilt, gilt turn-ins. Provenance : a few early marginal annotations; Prince Piero Ginori Conti, bookplate. FIRST EDITION of an oration on the death of Lorenzo the Magnificent (8 April 1492) delivered by the Bishop of Martorano, Calabria, on 16 April 1492 in the church of S. Maria la Nuova. One of Lorenzo's greatest political feats had been to forge an alliance with Ferdinand of Aragon, King of Naples, an achievement that both reconciled him to Pope Sixtus IV and consolidated his power in Florence. In this oration, Bienato highlights the political ties between Florence and Naples, and, by harking back to the Etruscans and Goths, places Lorenzo's achievements in a grand historical context. CR 780=1051; BMC VI, 784 (IA. 26824); GW 4346; IGI 1722; Goff B-667.
