EQUICOLA, Mario (1470-1525). Institutioni di Mario Equicola al comporre in ogni sorte di rima della lingua volgare, con uno eruditissimo discorso della pittura . Milan: [Francesco Minuzio Calvo], 1541. 4° (195 x 147 mm). Collation: A-E 4 F 6 . 26 leaves, the last blank. Italic type. Title within woodcut architectural border of two columns with leafy climbing vines and sphinx pedestals, at top a medallion portrait of a poet. (Lower border of title cut shaved, occasional slight marginal dampstaining.) 19th-century paper wrappers (backstrip defective and repaired). FIRST EDITION. The Latin scholar Mario Equicola, celebrated in his day, was a native of southern Lazio who settled at the court of Mantua, serving intermittently at the Ferrarese court as tutor to Isabella d'Este. Equicola advocated the use of a hybrid form of the Tuscan vernacular that borrowed from his own local vernacular in cases where the latter remained closer to Latin than either the current spoken Tuscan or the trecento model of Tuscan that was advocated by Pietro Bembo and others. Sometimes referred to as the lingua cortegiana because of its association with the language spoken and written in the princely courts of the Italian city-states, this form, like its rivals, contributed to the eventual establishment of a standard form of the vernacular in Italy. Equicola's posthumously published treatise on rhyme and versification, dedicated to Uberto Strozzi of Milan, is printed in an elegant flourished italic type directly modelled on Lodovico degli Arrighi's italic fonts of the previous decade. Adams E-307 (Cambridge copy lacking most of quire F); BM/STC Italian , p. 236.
