BROCKEDON, William (1787-1854). Illustrations of the Passes of the Alps, by which Italy communicates with France, Switzerland, and Germany , London: for the author, sold by Rodwell [and others], 1828-29. 2 volumes, 4° (332 x 250mm). 96 wood-engraved plates on india paper mounted and 13 maps, one double-page, all after Brockedon, good wide margins. (Some spotting, stonger at end of vol. II, affecting a few plates.) 19th-century half morocco, top edges gilt others uncut (spines lightly faded, quite rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : Le Starvan (bookplate). Neate 110: "a folio and quarto edition were published in 1828-1829". CUNNINGHAM, Carus Dunlop (1856-96) & Captain W. de W. ABNEY. The Pioneers of the Alps , London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington, 1887. 4° (323 x 258mm). Half title, photogravure frontispiece, dedication with small portrait, 22 photogravure portraits, illustrations, some full-page. (Half title and frontispiece almost detached.) Original cloth, title in gilt on front cover, top edges gilt, others uncut (spine faded, extremities quite rubbed). Provenance : Le Starvan (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, tipped-in at front pastedown is an envelope containing 2 pieces of paper with notes in pencil, with a note on the envelope in manuscript: "Dent Blanche Aug. 1882. Notes made at the time of finding the bodies of D. ?Gabbett & the two (?)Lockmatters. See p.148". This refers to an expedition lead by Josef Imboden in search of the bodies of those who were killed on the Dent Blanche in 1882. "...he led the search party during a violent snowstorm ... with a foot of snow on the rocks, and it was owing to his skill and correct knowledge of the locality that the bodies were found, though they were almost hidden by the freshly fallen snow" (p.148).
