Catalogue of one of the finest 18th-century Bible collections, comprising 840 printed editions and 9 manuscript Bibles, formed by Elizabeth Sophia Maria Duchess of Brunswick. "She concentrated on Bibles, and amassed a truly magnificent collection, which was housed in the ducal castle at Brunswick. She employed Georg Ludolph Otto Knoch to make a tabulated list of these Bibles, which is admirably laid out in five columns across the page, giving first the number of the book in the collection, then the description (including size and condition), the date, the place of printing, and the printer's name. The layout clearly impressed contemporaries, for it was imitated in Andrew Ducarel's bibliography of Bibles printed at London in 1777. The duchess certainly took an interest in the work, because she inscribed the Broxbourne copy to the bibliographer David Clement" (Pollard & Ehrman). Besterman 755; Pollard & Ehrman 335.
