CANAL, Antonio (1697-1768). Urbis Venetiarum prospectus celebriores, ex Antonii Canal tabulis XXXVIII. aere expressi ab Antonio Visentini . Venice: Giovanni Battista Pasquale, 1742. 3 parts in one volume, oblong 2° (350 x 512mm). 3 letterpress title-pages in red and black with engraved vignettes, engraved Prospectus , letterpress table of contents, double portrait of Canaletto and Visentini after Giovanni Battista Piazzetta 38 engraved views of Venice by Visentini after Canaletto. (Table of contents and portraits detached, light browning on the first 14 plates.) Contemporary vellum with gilt title on spine (part of upper spine torn and detached). A large-margined copy of the FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. Begun in 1728 and completed in 1735, Visentini's set of engravings commissioned by Consul Joseph Smith after 38 paintings by Canaletto in his collection is "the most widely known and the best of the many engravings after Canalatto's views of Venice" (F.J.B.Watson, The Burlington Magazine , 1950, p.351).
