CARSTAIRS, JOE] Large archive of photographs depicting Carstairs and others, 1920s-80s . A deep survey of images of Carstairs throughout her entire life, including some very early images of Carstairs as an adolescent and young adult (one signed 'Cousin Marion 1927'), images of family members (including a large image of Jabez A. Bostwick, founding partner of Standard Oil), a number of vintage posed portraits stamped by George Platt Lynes photographs of various beauties connected to Carstairs such as the actress Gwen Farrar (the namesake of Carstairs' boat Newg) and Leslie Nast (Mrs. Conde Nast), many images of Carstairs' property at Whale Cay, its interiors, Christmas parties, after storms, etc., and images of Carstairs with friends in later years. The archive over one hundred images, sizes vary. Generally well preserved but some creasing, stains and tears, signs of handling, many mounted to album leaves, others with remnants of former mounting to verso, should be seen. This archive provides an unpublished survey into the long life of Joe Carstairs (born Marion Barbara Carstairs in London in 1900; died Miami, Florida 1993). Here we see Carstairs as young woman wearing a dress on the deck of a ship (she crossed the Atlantic at least 15 times before turning 20), later we see her confidently smoking in a man's suit in portraits by George Platt Lynes we see her managing the vast wilderness of her property on Whale Cay, and in later years with friends. An enigma for much of her life, Summerscale writes "Joe was mysterious to those who knew her: she lived so much in the moment, with so little reflection, that her internal life was almost invisible. Carstairs did not look back and she never explained. She did not speak in the language of cause and consequence. 'I never felt anything about myself,' she once said. 'I was just it.' She believed the world and time exerted no force upon her, were merely backdrops to her performance" (p. 4). Provenance: The Collection of Marion B. 'Joe' Carstairs (1900-1993) C Estate of Jacqueline F. Rae
