Cased Model of the Whaling Barque Charles W. Morgan, built by Phillip S. Reed, Massachusetts, late 20th century, mounted in a glazed exotic wood veneer case, overall ht. 10 1/4, wd. 9, lg. 16 1/2 in. Note: The Charles W. Morgan was built by Jethro and Zachariah Hillman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1840 and named after the Quaker whaling merchant and owner of the vessel, Charles W. Morgan. In her 80 years of service, she made 37 voyages ranging from nine months to five years and brought home 54,483 barrels of whale oil and 152,934 pounds of whalebone. She also sailed in the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans surviving ice and snowstorms, and her crew survived a cannibal attack in the South Pacific. She is the last survivor of a fleet that in 1846 numbered 736 vessels. She has been fully restored and now resides at Mystic Seaport.
