CATHARINE, Saint, of Bologna (1413-1463). Libro devoto ... essa lascio scripto de sua propria mano , Bologna: Girolamo Plato Benedetti, 15 July 1511. 4° (204 x 145mm.), full-page woodcut illustration of St. Catharine on verso of title, holding a cross in the right hand and a book in the left, surrounded by a criblé border, printer's device on verso of final leaf (outer margin of title with small paper repair slightly affecting woodcut border on verso, lightly spotted, occasional, mainly marginal, light soiling, some margins faintly waterstained), 19th-century green half roan, patterned paper boards, flat spine ruled and lettered in gilt, paper labels (lightly rubbed). Provenance : C.W. Dyson Perrins (bookplate, sale Sotheby's, 17 June 1946, lot 72). Third edition of Le armi necessarie alla battaglia spirituale . The woodcut of St Catharine depicts the body of the saint as it is preserved in the church of the Corpus Domini in Bologna and first appeared in a Bologna edition of 1500 (Mortimer).
