CHINESE STONE SEATED FIGURE Eastern Zhou period , 770-256 BC or later A carved stone figure of a male seated on a low bench, dressed in voluminous robes; the hands clasped in the lap, the broad sleeves draped on the knees, the open-fronted coat hanging from the shoulders; the face finely executed with large eyebrows and trailing beard, a small cap to the head. Stone, 3.6 kg, 25 cm (10"). Very fine condition. [The costume and facial features are reminiscent of those shown in images of Confucius and Mencius.] Provenance Ex Steinberg collection.
