CHRISTMAS CAROL]. -- THEATRE ROYAL, ADELPHI. Christmas Carol! . London: S.G. Fairbrother, 12 February 1844. Broadside (420 x 440 mm). Text double-column. (A few short splits along folds, a few chips, generally in good condition.) Provenance : Kenyon Starling. Edward Stirling dramatized this production. Stirling wrote over 200 plays and adaptations, and those of Pickwick , Oliver Twist , Nicholas Nickleby , The Old Curiosity Shop and Martin Chuzzlewit were performed well before the novels completed their serial runs. After a performance of Stirling's Nickleby at the Adelphi Theatre, Dickens commented: "My general objection to the adaptation of any unfinished work of mine simply is that being badly done and worse acted, it tends to vulgarize the characters, to destroy or weaken the minds of those who see the impressions I have endeavoured to create." Dickens did see several other of Stirling's adaptations and was generally pleased with the results. Yale/Gimbel H876 (5 February performance).
