Cut in the shape of a foot with a signature "tar heel" on bottom. Text reads "61 -- 65 / First at Bethel / Last at Appomattox / The Tar Heels / Furnished 127,000 Soldiers / Lost 40,275 / [Illegible]. Furthest. Longest." Dating back to North Carolina's early history, a "tar heel" initially referred to poor, white laborers who worked to produce turpentine, tar, pitch and other materials for the naval industry. This derogatory epithet was later embraced by North Carolina soldiers who served during the Civil War and utilized the term as an expression of state pride.
