"When I was first editing Creepy and Eerie, it dawned on me somewhere along the line, that we could probably never duplicate EC's successful approach to horror comics. They were excellent; but in a way they belong to the '50s. With a few exceptions, their approach was almost one of black humor; the stories were inevitably sick jokes, often quite clever ones. I thought... that a broader approach is needed. If the books should be like anything, it's probably the old Weird Tales. EC could have four stories of more of less the same type, but with seven per issue, we should have more diversity. Weird Tales would have horror by Lovecraft, sword & sorcery by Howard, and occasional science-fiction by Long.
