HORRIFIC No. 9 Publisher: Comic Media [Indicia: Harwell Publications, Inc.] Date Published: January, 1954 Description: Good (2.0). Spine stress, cover detached at top staple, bottom staple pulled, staple rust, 1½" SEALED TEAR to right edge of front cover, corners creased, rubbed spot to 1st "R" in "HORROR," shallow edge chip to back cover, some toning to top edge of back cover and last page. Cream to light tan pages. Cover: Don Heck. Art: Pete Morisi, Max Elkin, Rudy Palais, Don Heck (spot illustration). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 3.0 sold for $185 in 1/20. In Max Elkins's "The Horrible Trade," hunter Kenneth King seduces an African witch doctor's daughter, then slaps her around, racially insults her, and leaves her in disgrace: "Once and for all, you first cousin to an ape... the fun is over, understand!" The witch doctor gets revenge by turning King into a lion just in time for another hunter to blow him away. According to one comics historian, stories of this sort, "combining racism, sexuality, and violence, presented the United States as culturally insensitive and oblivious to the true history, cost, and legacy of chattel slavery." — Paul S. Hirsh, Pulp Empire: The Secret History of Comic Book Imperialism. University of Chicago: 2021, p. 182. Enjoying the Sale? Order a fully-illustrated softcover catalogue for 30 bucks.
