Engraved frontispiece and 20 plates by Lodovico Mattioli folding engraved and letterpress table, large printer's device on title, oval author portrait vignette, 16 tailpieces. (Frontispiece and title torn without loss, repaired in frontispiece, and on guards with small marginal stain, occasional light spotting, short tear in plate 13 without loss.) Contemporary vellum, red leather spine label. Provenance : unidentified armorial bookplate. These metrical versions by G.P. Riva, P.B. Balbi, G.P. Zanotti and others are based on the comic novel of Giulio Cesare Croce. His story of a crafty peasant and his simpleton son Bertoldino, was so popular than a Bolognese abbot, Adriano Banchieri (1565-1634), created a son for Bertoldino, Cacasenno.
