Anderson (Martin, pseud. 'Cynicus'). An album of 112 original watercolours, circa 1899, 112 humorous watercolours on paper, each signed 'Cynicus', most with titles and many containing lines of verse, comprising 8 watercolours with sheet size measuring 20 x 36 cm, and 104 watercolours with sheet size measuring 22 x 17 cm, all pasted into a contemporary red half morocco album, the upper cover with "Cynicus" in stylised gilt lettering, with an original photograph of the artist pasted to the front pastedown inscribed in ink "Very Sincerely Yours, Cynicus, 22nd April 1899" (Quantity: 1) Martin Anderson (1854-1932), who worked under his pseudonym Cynicus, illustrated several books but is perhaps best known for his postcards. He took particular delight in the mocking of authority figures including clergy, judges, policemen and housewives.
