Folding wood-engraved frontispiece, steel-engraved portrait of the author by W.Holl after Henry Phillips 22 wood-engraved plates most by J.W.Whymper, one folding letterpress and wood-engraved geological section, two folding steel-engraved maps by Arrowsmith with routes marked in red, extra-illustrated with an autograph note and letter, and a 27pp. pamphlet The Farewell Livingstone Festival (bound at the end of the second volume), and an additional portrait of the author. Contemporary calf (spines rubbed and chipped). Provenance : Robert Cooke (d.1891, publisher, ALS); R.J.Howard (inserted, related ALS, dated 1893). LIVINGSTONE'S PUBLISHERS' COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, first issue. Robert Cooke nephew of John Murray the Second, was the business partner of John Murray the Third. Livingstone returned to London from Africa on 12th December 1856. The account of his travels was published in November 1857. The 4 page autograph letter signed to Cooke, dated 10th August [1857] Hadley Green, 8vo, concerns changes to the wording of the title page, he asks to see a proof of the Tsetse fly engraving (it was used as the title vignette), mentions that he has sent a proof to the printer (Mr. Clowes) and that he 'saw Arrowsmith yesterday I took him to church. He wont work the worse for this. The Livingstone festival pamphlet is an almost verbatim report of the toasts and speeches made at a 'festival in honour of Dr.Livingstone... held at the Freemasons' Tavern on the 13th February, 1858, Sir Roderick Murchison in the Chair', in addition it includes a list of most of those who attended. The signed autograph note reads 'with the kindest regards of David Livingstone London 20 February 1858'. Livingstone left England for Africa on the 10th March 1858. (2)
