Title vignette, folding wood-engraved frontispiece, engraved portrait after Henry Phillips 23 wood-engraved plates, most by J.W. Whymper, one folding, 2 folding maps with Livingstone's routes in red, one in rear pocket, 20 wood-engraved illustrations. Extra-illustrated with a larger version of the portrait. Advertisements dated 1 November, 1857. (Title slightly cropped at foot, a few plate margins spotted.) Original brown cloth by Edmonds and Remnants (slight wear to spine ends, front inner hinges split, glue marks and tear to front free endpaper due to mounting of portrait on verso). Provenance : 'Edmund Ashworth with the kindest regards of David Livingstone 6th March 1858' (author's inscription on front blank) -- thence by direct descent. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, PRESENTATION COPY. Edmund Ashworth (1800-1881), the recipient of this copy, was a prominent Lancashire cotton manufacturer with a Quaker background. By 1854 he and his brother, Henry, employed 1000 people on mills at Belmont, Egerton and New Eagley, providing them with good-quality housing, schools, and leisure facilities (see ODNB). His descendants retain other books from his library of African travel and the photograph album of an organised tour he himself made to Africa. Livingstone inscribed this copy of Missionary Travels to Ashworth just six days before his Zambesi expedition left Birkenhead on 10th March 1858. Abbey Travel , 347; Mendelssohn I, p.908.
