Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco spine label (some rubbing along joints and edges, two small holes on rear cover). Provenance : Joseph Y. Jeanes (bookplate); Ann Elizabeth Heard (signature on front flyleaf). FIRST EDITION. Between 1790 and 1807, Delano, an American mariner and author from Massachusetts, made several voyages to various parts of the Pacific including Hawaii, Palau, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and Canton. His travelogue describes the various cultures he encountered and also provides a unique account of the Bounty and Captain Bligh, including an early map of Pitcairn Island. Herman Melville's short story, "Benito Cereno" is taken from Delano's adventure seizing a Spanish ship that had been taken over by the slaves it was transporting.
