DETECTIVE COMICS No. 122 * 1st Catwoman Cover Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: Detective Comics, Inc.] Date Published: April, 1947 Description: CGC certified: Apparent Fair (1.0). Purple label: Restored. Off-white to white pages. Grader notes: "Reattached with tape cover; TOP EDGE OF BACK COVER TRIMMED; heavy tape cover; moderate creasing to cover; moderate spine stress lines to cover; one half married back cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 127 graded copies (114 Universal, 6 Qualified, 1 Signature Series, 6 Restored). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A restored 0.5 (C-4, centerfold missing, incomplete) sold for $400 in 6/21. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A 1.0 sold for $1500 in 12/21; a 0.5 sold for $1113 in 7/20. Credits: Cover: Bob Kane (Charles Paris inks). Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Bob Kane (Charles Paris inks), John Daly, Lee Harris, Curt Swan. Overstreet: "1st Catwoman cover." Bat-cyclopedia: "In January 1947 Batman and Robin match wits with the CATWOMAN.... a daring and beautiful arch-villainess whose costumes, special equipment, and choice of crimes all revolve around a feline theme. She is GOTHAM CITY'S 'most dreaded female figure,' its undisputed 'queen of crime,' and, in the words of an underworld colleague, '...the cleverest, most dangerous — and most beautiful lady of crime in the country...!' Early texts call her the Cat — or employ the forms Cat Woman or Cat-Woman — but Catwoman has long since emerged as the only authentic rendering. "Although one text refers to the Catwoman as 'that silken, beautiful and deadly queen of crime,' while another portrays her as carrying a pistol, there is no evidence whatever that the Catwoman is really 'deadly' or that she has ever actually committed a murder. On the contrary, the picture of the Catwoman that emerges from the chronicles is of a woman unalterably opposed to killing and extremely ambivalent regarding her own role as a criminal." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 120, 160-161. This ish features Catwoman's first-ever cover appearance, a significant milestone for Batman's most celebrated love interest. "The most dramatic expression of this ambivalence [towards crime] — and the one which continues to hold the greatest fascination for Batman scholars — is the Catwoman's undeniable love for Batman, a love which has as its partial basis the Catwoman's subconscious belief that, of all men, only Batman might be powerful enough to wrest her from the sordid web of crime in which she has allowed herself to become enmeshed." — Ibid. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
