Bat-cyclopedia: "In February 1940 Batman matches wits with PROFESSOR HUGO STRANGE.... a 'crafty, diabolical arch-criminal' with a 'brilliant but distorted brain.' Bruce Wayne, the man who is secretly BATMAN, has described Professor Hugo Strange as 'the most dangerous man in the world! Scientist, philosopher and a criminal genius — little is known of him, yet this man is undoubtedly the greatest organizer of crime in the world!'" — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 115, 343. Batman's Finned Gloves: Besides featuring Batman's first major villain, this ish also features the debut of the Caped Crusader's finned gauntlets, the last major adjustment to Batman's costume (aside from the gradual shrinking of his oversized bat-ears) until the bright yellow chest oval was added to his tunic in 1964. As far as we can tell, Batman's gauntlet fins served no designated purpose (aside from looking really cool) until Christopher Nolan's film Batman Begins (2005) established that the fins were useful for blocking sword and knife attacks. Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) furthered the tactical significance of Batman's gauntlet fins by depicting them as spring-loaded, sharp-edged projectiles. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017.
