Purple Label: Restored (C-4). Off-white to white pages. Grader notes: "Detached cover; tape cover; tape interior cover; color touch on full left & full bottom front cover; moderate creasing to cover; moderate staining to cover; pieces added bottom back cover C-2; pieces added full center spine C-4." A restored 1.0 (B-3) sold for $850 in 10/19; a restored 3.5 (C) sold for $1950 in 8/20. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A 2.0 sold for $3433 in 12/21; a 1.8 sold for $1957 in 7/23. Credits: Cover: Jerry Robinson. Scripts: Bill Finger, Joe Simon/Jack Kirby?, Jack Lehti, Murray Boltinoff? Art: Bob Kane (Jerry Robinson inks, George Roussos backgrounds), Jack Kirby (with Joe Simon), Jack Lehti (Charles Paris inks), George Storm?, Pierce Rice, Lee Harris (Charles Paris inks), Howard Sherman. Overstreet: "1st Penguin cover." Bat-cyclopedia: "In September 1942 Batman and Robin match wits with the PENGUIN.... [who] commits a series of ingenious crimes involving the use of avian accomplices. He sells a carefully trained parrot to a wealthy collector named Gemly, waits until the bird has had the opportunity to memorize the combination to Gemly's safe, and then, after acquiring the combination from the parrot, kills both Gemly and the bird — using a special gas containing 'the germ of psittacosis... parrot fever' so that murder will not be suspected — and calmly loots Gemly's safe." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, pp. 117, 297. The Penguin's Pathology: "Despite his integration of bird motifs and trick umbrellas, the Penguin is not pathologically obsessed with either. Unlike the Riddler, who must send riddles, or Two-Face, who becomes crippled with indecision when he can't toss his special coin, Oswald can function without his signature accoutrements. A museum curator putting a jeweled bird on display can count on Cobblepot to come steal it, of course, but passionate collecting does not necessarily equal utter obsession.... Unlike most other prominent Bat-foes, the Penguin when incarcerated goes to prison, not Arkham Asylum. Even by Gotham's ambiguous standards for criminal insanity, the Penguin is sane. For all his ruthlessness, the Penguin shows greater rationality than the Joker, more moments of sympathy than the Riddler, and a stronger need for superficial social acceptance than most of Batman's other foes." — Travis Langley, Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight. Wiley: 2021, p. 143. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
