DOHENY, Estelle (1875-1958) -- Lucille V. MILLER. Catalogue of Books & Manuscripts in the Estelle Doheny Collection . Los Angeles: Privately Printed by Ward Ritchie, 1940-1946. 3 volumes, large 4 o. Plates. Original tan cloth, red morocco lettering pieces (labels worn, spine torn on vol. 3). Provenance : Justin G. Turner (bookplate in vol. III, typed letter signed from Lucille Miller thanking him for his order of the catalogue). The private catalogue of the library of the great American female bibliophile, Estelle Doheny, limited to 100 copies. Mrs. Doheny was a fervent Catholic who left her important library to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with the proviso that it must not be sold for thirty years. Following this period, the collection was sold by Christie's from 1987-89, with the total sales realizing $37,842,758--this figure remains the standing record for any library sold at auction.
