Cabinet Card of White House physician Dr. James Crowdhill Hall (1805-1880), underneath which appears the handwritten notation “copyrighted By. M. B. Brady 1880,” while verso reads “Brady Photo Washington D.C. 1859, with envelope featuring personal note that reads “For Miss Miller with Mrs. Mosher’s compliments.” Dr. James Crowdhill Hall graduated in 1827 from the University of Pennsylvania with his medical degree. He was a prominent Washington, D.C., doctor who served as personal physician to at least five U. S. Presidents from Jackson to Lincoln as well as to the families of U.S. Supreme Court Justices, cabinet members, foreign ministers, and U.S. Representatives and Senators. He attended the death bed of President Lincoln and was called to testify at the trial of the Lincoln conspirators as to Lewis Powell's sanity. This image was given to Miss Virginia Miller who was the daughter of another noted capital physician Dr. Thomas Miller Dr. Thomas Miller was a close personal friend of Dr. Hall and both men served as White House physicians. Given the handwritten note that appears on the envelope accompanying this image, it is possible that the image was acquired by photographer Charles D. Mosher's studios and sent to Miss Miller by Mosher's wife after its acquisition. This cabinet card image of Dr. Hall can be attributed to the Mathew Brady Studio, as a photo nearly identical to this one is listed in the National Archives catalog as being created by the War Department, Office of the Chief Signal Officer, from the series titled "Mathew Brady Photographs of Civil War-Era Personalities and Scenes." Condition: Good condition.
