FIRST COLLECTED EDITION OF DRAKE'S VOYAGES. The four sections comprise: "His dangerous adventuring for Gold and Silver with the gaining thereof. And the surprizing of Nombre de dios by himselfe and two and fifty men," "His Encompassing the World," the "West-Indian Voyage. Accompanied with Christopher Carleill, Martin Frobusher...," and "Another Voyage into the West Indies ... accompanied with Sir John Hawkins...." Included is the account of the first English circumnavigation, the claiming of New Albion for Britain, much plundering of Spanish treasure, and the rescue of colonists remaining on Roanoke Island in Virginia. Drake's claiming of California is described as follows: "This country our Generall named Albion, and that for two causes, the one in respect of the white banks and cliffes, which lie toward the sea: the other, that it might have some affinity, even in name also, with our own country, which was sometime so called."
