Le Voyage curieux, faict autour du Monde.... Paris: Chez Antoine Robinot, 1641. Small 8vo (164 x 110 mm). a4, A-O8, P4 (lacks P4, blank?). Engraved title vignette. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript titling to spine. Lacking map, some light dampstaining, binding with some light staining, small tears to pastedowns. AN UNSOPHISTICATED COPY OF A RARE WORK, but without the rare map. "The translator's, or perhaps merely the editor's name was F. de Louvencourt, as we find it subscribed to the dedication to St. Simon Baron de Courtomer. He had received the narrative from the Baron, one of whose tenants had been amongst Drake's crew in this voyage, and his own labour may not have been a translation, but merely an improvement of the French sailor's text. The narrative is certainly not identical with the English "World Encompassed," although it goes over the same details, yet the navigator is always styled "nostre General," just as he is "our general" in the English account" (Wagner). A map ("La Herdiese Enterprinse Faict par le Signeur Draeck d'Avoir Cirquit Toute la Terre") is found in some copies (the Streeter copy for example), but is not present here. Sabin 24806; Streeter 38; Wagner South-West 9d.
