Florence: Stamperia di S.A.S., 1688. 8 o (text: 160 x 110 mm, overall 245 x 170 mm). 17 engraved double-page plates, unfolded to 245 x 336 mm, by ARNOLD VAN WESTERHOUT after JACOPO CHIAVISTELLI (some occasional minor staining). Later quarter vellum. Provenance : manuscript notation on title-page indicating where the play was first performed. Noris's text of the opera performed at the festivities celebrating the wedding of FERDINANDO III DE'MEDICI (1663-1713), Grand Duke of Tuscany and VIOLANTE BEATRICE (1673-1731), Princess of Bavaria. The melodrama in three acts, with music by GIOVANNI MARIA PAGLIARDI, was performed in Florence on 29 January 1689 at the Teatro dell'Accademia degli Immobili, later known as the Teatro all Pergola. The magnificent stage designs are attributed to Jacopo Chiavistelli a Florentine painter, who specialized in quadratura, or the technique of using spatial effects to create a three-dimensional architectural space on an otherwise flat surface, and are elegantly engraved by Arnold van Westerhout When this copy was rebound, the plates were unfolded and bound in at their relevant place within the text.
