FIRST EDITION of this description of the 21 carriages carrying representations of the Roman gods during the festivities for the marriage in 1565 of the Grand Duke Francesco I and Joanna of Austria, sister of the Emperor Maxmilian II. An enormous team of architects, sculptors and painters, headed by Vasari, was needed to transform Florence into the humanist dreamland of ancient Rome.
