Beschreibung:

Anonymous half plate daguerreotype portrait of Francis Wayland standing assertively, his right hand on his hip, housed in full case separated at hinge. Francis Wayland (1796-1855), the son of a Baptist Minister, graduated from Union College in 1813 and studied medicine in New York City until 1816, when he abandoned medicine and entered the Andover Theological Seminary to study for the ministry. By 1817, Wayland did not have the funds to conclude his course in theology and returned to Union College to work as a tutor from 1817-1821. He then became a minister at the First Baptist Church in Boston from 1821-1826, but he again accepted a position at Union College in 1826 as professor of mathematics and natural philosophy. He also became an early advocate of temperance and anti-slavery causes. In early 1827, Wayland was elected Brown University's President, and he held this position for the next 28 years, gradually building up the college in various ways, including improving academic discipline and forming a library. He also wrote text-books on ethics and economics. Wayland had rather progressive views regarding education, stating in his Report to the Corporation of Brown University in 1850 that "every student might study what he chose, all that he chose, and nothing but what he chose." This report led to more flexible entrance and degree requirements for students, and also led to the introduction of electives. Wayland retired as President in 1855, and served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in America, in Providence, RI from 1857-1858. He died in Providence in 1865. Wayland Seminary was established 2 years later, mainly to educate former slaves, and was named in his honor. (Information obtained from Brown University Website, October 14, 2011.) The lot is accompanied by the following publications: Bartol, C.A. Motive Powers: A Sermon Preached in the West Church, Boston. Boston, MA: John Wilson and Son, 1853. With Francis Wayland inked on front cover; and Brown University. Proceedings in Reference to the Resignation of President Wayland, and the Induction of President Sears. Providence, RI: Knowles, Anthony & Co. Printers, 1856. Plus two newspaper clippings on Wayland, including an obituary from Harper's Weekly. Condition: Housed in full case separated at hinge; few scattered spots on mat.
