GULIELMUS DURANDUS. Speculum iudiciale . Strassburg: Georg Husner and Johann Beckenhub, 22 November 1473 (GW 9148). Opening leaf on paper with illuminated initial with author portrait and a full-page border including birds, a stag and doe, wild men and a coat-of-arms. [southern Germany, c.1475] 418 x 285mm (leaf); 85 x 89mm (miniature). Historiated initial R with a portrait of the author dressed in a red robe and cap and seated in a canopied chair behind a reading desk against a burnished gold ground, the initial in dark blue and white against a burnished silver ground within a square frame; the border of scrolling acanthus incorporating a coat-of-arms, several fanciful flowers, two deer, four birds, and two wild men, one climbing and one shooting with a bow at a rabbit whose head just appears at the lower right. The printed text rubricated with a simple red Lombard initial, paragraph signs and capital strokes; a few contemporary marginalia in a German cursive hand (the silver oxidised, some flaking of pigment, cropped touching border at lower right, damp stain in lower right margin, blank upper margin unobtrusively mended). Framed.
