Paris: Moutard, 1781-1783. 6 volumes, 8 (196 x 120mm). Half title in each volume. (Some browning, title to vol. VI shaved at outer margin.) Contemporary stained calf, spines gilt, red speckled edges (some joints slightly split, extremities lightly rubbed). First published in folio in 1697 (see previous lot), Herbelot's only published work was first written in Arabic, and then translated into French when being prepared for publication: it does not concern all oriental peoples, but specifically Arabs, Persians and Turks, much of the information being derived from the bibliographic dictionary of Ghadji-Khalfah, and over 150 other Islamic mansucripts.
