HOBSON, Geoffrey Dudley (1882-1949). Bindings in Cambridge Libraries . Cambridge: Walter Lewis at the University Press, 1929. 2 o (369 x 238 mm). 72 plates including 27 in color. LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF 250 COPIES. BOUND FOR J.R. ABBEY BY ROGER POWELL AND PETER WATERS, in collaboration with Sheila Waters, Froxfield, Hamps, signed on back turn-in and dated 1963: gold-tooled and blind-stamped citron morocco, sides and flat spine with multiple straight fillets, three vertical rows of historiated and decorative panels copied after English Renaissance examples in Abbey's collection and blocked from printer's zincos, pastedowns with ink impressions of the same zincos, gilt edges. Matching chemise and slipcase. Provenance : Major Abbey (bookplate, Sotheby sale 1970, Part VI, lot 2726). G.D. Hobson's important study was initially based on unpublished researches by N.F. Barwell, H.M. Davies and C.E. Sayle (all prominently mentioned on the title-page), but then enormously extended to form an entirely new book. Roger Powell (b. 1896) did not take up binding professionally before 1930. He worked as a partner in Douglas Cockerell & Son from 1935 until 1947, when he set up on his own, taking Peter Waters (b. 1930) into partnership in 1956.
