FIRST EDITION of a study "which was to advance immeasurably binding research" (B.H.Breslauer, The uses of Bookbinding Literature p. 28). NO. 1 OF 25 DE LUXE COPIES ON HAND-MADE PAPER. The binding by Best & Co, commissioned by the author, evokes the Renaissance architectural binding decoration that forms an important chapter in the book (ch. II). Loosely inserted is an autograph letter signed by A.W. Pollard, dated 15 October 1926, congratualting his correspondent on "the best bit of work on bindings which has ever been done in England... which takes account of every kind of evidence, and lets the conclusion emerge from the facts without any attempt to press a pre-conceived theory."
