Barrias mounted. 19th-century green morocco, sides with gilt fleurons at the corners, a gilt arabesque with initials "T.P." at center, spine gilt-lettered and -decorated, brown silk linings, edges gilt. Provenance : purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 27 August 1957. The main feature of this edition are the 18 photographically reproduced copies of pictures by M. Barrias. They were separately printed and then pasted onto the text. They include a full-page frontispiece, 6 landscapes of places associated with Horace and 11 vignettes at the head of each book. In 1858 Didot published an edition of Virgil in the same form. Roosens & Salu 5139 (calling for 19 photos, apparently in error).
